The 16th Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Students’ Parliament has presented its trophy to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson for emerging as the overall best at the Commonwealth Inter-University Debate Championship held at the Accra International Conference Centre.
The 2022 Commonwealth Inter-University Debate Championship, held from 13th to 14th March is organised annually by the Parliament of Ghana to mark Commonwealth Day. It also aims at inculcating the passion for debate in the youth across Commonwealth countries.

Giving an overview of the competition, the Speaker of the KNUST Students’ Parliament, Mr. Sulemana Shamuna explained that the KNUST Debate Team led by him had the support of Michael Yeboah Amoah, MPhil Microbiology; Andrews Terku, MPhil Microbiology; and Chleo-Patra Azantilow Awompomi, 2nd Year LLB. The competition involved teams from public universities in Ghana, squaring off in multiple rounds on the motion, Female Participation in the Parliamentary System; are the current provisions enough? According to him, the competition has taught them a lot and looks forward to having more engagement with the Ghanaian debate society,” he expressed.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, expressed her excitement and pride at the team's outstanding feat. According to her, the win has reaffirmed her belief that some of the nation’s and the world's major problems can be addressed through brilliant debates such as theirs. She, thus, charged the students to always bear in mind that they are smart, and unique to stand out wherever they go.
The KNUST-SRC Parliamentary Council presented citations to the Vice-Chancellor and the Director of Students’ Affairs, Professor Wilson Agyei Agyare for their tolerance, benevolent contributions, and great leadership skills they have offered to the KNUST Students’ Parliament.
Professor Agyare, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, appreciated the students for honouring them and promised Management’s continuous support for them.
